Friday Postcard: La Rochelle
Posted on 28. Oct, 2011 by Steph in Photos

I’ve spotted these mysterious piles of rocks in Eastern Europe, Iceland, Australia and even Thailand. Now here they are in La Rochelle, France. Who builds these things anyways? (Picture by Marie @ EuroTripTips).

These things are all over the place on trails in the US. They are often used as trail markers. Hope that helps.

I saw them on a little island in Croatia, too!

They’re called “cairns.” They were traditionally left by hikers to mark the way along a trail. These days, though, it’s kind of just a fad to add some rocks to them in an “I’ve been here” sort of way.
