Best of The Blogosphere: October 2011

Wow, it’s time for another update already. I’ve been housesitting in Bogota for all of October and it has been relaxing and fun. I’ve had a lot of time to catch up on work and reading and to bond with Dexter, man of the house. It’s actually the longest I’ve been in one place since I was in Xi’an!
What’s Up With Me:
- Yahoo News! Featured Reader- Earlier this month I partnered with Yahoo to help promote their new facebook widget which helps you share what you’re reading with your friends and family on facebook. They in turn featured me on their facebook page and their website. As a reasult October is now my highest traffic month ever!
- How A Career Break Turned My Life Totally Upside Down- in honor of Meet Plan Go this month I did a guest post for Sonia at Pulpology about my experiences with taking time off of work to travel.
- Travel Plans: This month I’ve spent entirely in Bogota, exploring the interesting foods and sights of Colombia. In November I’m really looking forward to getting out of the city and seeing some of the interesting places around the country before heading to Ecuador.
This Month Around the Web
- A Night At Costa Rica’s Famous Brothel- Brendan’s Adventures- I have a lot of mixed feelings about foreign tourists and local prostitutes. I really liked Brendan’s more neutral take while spending the night in a known prostitution hotel.
- On Travel and Body Image- The Wanderlust Project- One of the most unsettling things about traveling as a woman is differences in body type and beauty standards around the world.
- Top 5 Costs You Probably Don’t Think About Before you go Backpacking- Backpacks and Bunkbeds- You’re probably budgeting for food and accommodation, but what about laundry and these other important details?
- The Night I Thought We Might Drown in a Flash Flood- Ordinary Traveler- Great storytelling in this suspensful adventure.
- Girls From Around the World: A Girl Effect Slideshow- Uncornered Market- There is a reason I am constantly featuring Dan and Audrey’s work- it’s because they are so great at capturing the beauty and humanity of different places in the world. In this piece they tackle the importance of educating women.
- The Scariest Thing I Have Ever Done- A Dangerous Business- I want to go bungee jumping soooo baddddd.
- Robbed in Panama City! And it Ain’t Pretty- Expert Vagabond- Poor Matt just experienced a worst case travel scenario. Read his cautionary tale and think about maybe helping him get back on his feet!

No real itinerary, just a vague plan to head South. Probably need to get slightly more organized before I leave Bogota.
