Best of the Blogosphere: September 2011
Posted on 29. Sep, 2011 by Steph in Links, Resources
Hey guys, September went by pretty fast didn’t it? Maybe because I was heading up against the deadline of leaving again or maybe just because September is a fun and busy month! In any case, here’s the update:
What I’ve Been Up To:
- A new mailing list!- Now you can get my articles sent directly to your inbox in a nice pretty format. If you’re getting the old feedburner emails be sure to upgrade!
- Ten Places You Can Drink Like a Writer- My first post for BootsnAll about two of my favorite subjects: literature and booze.
- Industry Interview with Steph of Twenty-Something Travel- Pretty much what it sounds like, I did an interview with Travellerspoint.
- Free Thrifty Travel Tips Ebook- A great resource full of useful blog posts- including one by me!
- Travel Plans- September has mostly been about being at home and spending time with my family, although I did make some time for a getaway to Charleston, South Carolina. As for October, well unless you haven’t been paying any attention at all, you know that I’m flying to Colombia tomorrow!
This Month Around the Web:
- And You May Ask Yourself ‘How Did I get Here?’- Ephemera and Detritus- Traveling has really forced my to examine my own sense of privilege and consider the advantages I have from being born where I was, to who I was. I really like this exploration of that.
- Why a Travel Break Could be the Best Career Move you Ever Make- BootsnAll- Meet Plan Go is in October (check it out if you haven’t already) and this post is a timely reminder of why career breaks will help, not hurt, your career.
- 20 Interesting Facts About Colombia- FOGG Odyssey- A funny (and timely for me) infographic about some of the most odd and interesting things to know about Colombia.
- Learning to Cook Japanese Buddhist Cuisine in Kyoto- Never-ending Voyage- all I can say is yum.
- The Solo Travelers Guide to Dealing with Unwanted Attention in Asia- Unbrave Girl- Solo safety has really been on my mind this month for some reason. Love Sally’s funny but true look at what it’s like to be a solo female in Asia.
- Solo Female Travel, Trust, and the Art of Fitting in- Legal Nomads- In a related post, Jodi responds to the same NYT article I did about what it’s like to travel as a lady alone.
- Confessions of a Backpacker: I’m in Love!- Backpacking Matt-What happens when your desire to see the world conflicts with your love of a single place?
- Touring London’s Dangerously Seductive Bookshops- Vagabondish- I know firsthand just how dangerous they can be- books are a bitch to ship home! Lots of good recommendations here.
- An Inconvenient Death- Man on the Lam- A really serious and thoughtful post by Raymond upon witnessing a pedestrians death in Vietnam. Very moving.
- Ethics of Tourism: The Mines of Potosi, Bolivia- 2 Backpackers- Another good discussion of whether tourism is helpful or hurtful.
- Traveling Using Astrology- Traveler Ahoy- Finally, kind of a fun post by Alouise about how to maybe gain a little extra insight into your travel style?
What were YOUR favorite articles this month?

I like the post from 2backpackers about ethical tourism. Something I think gets glossed over in a lot of places online.

Nice work on the 10 places you can drink like a writer Steph. I have to agree with you about the Spaniard on Hampstead Heath. Brilliant pub. Had some great nights in there… didn’t write a thing though, well bar my signature on the bar tab.
Have a great time in Colombia. Looking forward to reading all about it.
Cheers

I loved reading your bootsnall article. I probably (definitely) won’t write a novel or story as great as J.R.R Toilkein or Ernest Hemingway, but I can at least visit the bars the frequented. And thanks very much for including me in your best of the blogosphere list.

Thanks! I do think there’s something so inspiring about soaking up the places where great minds used to be.
