Deep Blue Sydney

The best thing about Australian cities is that you don’t have to go too far to escape the urban rush and reconnect with nature. I think the Australian people just prioritize this more- being connected with the environment is a cultural necessity. All of the major cities have sweeping public parks, green spaces and waterways where it’s easy to forget you are in a metropolis.

This was especially true in Sydney, where water is everywhere. It’s centerpiece is Sydney Harbor, an enormous blue expanse with the Opera House perched on it’s banks. It’s seriously stunning.

Sydney’s proximity to the ocean is also a major influence. It’s a bit of a hike (and bus ride) but Sydney has it’s very own beach town just on the outskirts, where jutting cliffs overlook the ocean.

First there is Bondi, perhaps the most famous beach in Australia. Even for a tourist center it’s picturesque- a thick crescent of sand and major waves. Bondi beach hotels, surf shops and cafes line the esplanade.

It’s only a ten minute walk from there to some serious natural beauty. The Eastern Beaches are stunning, uncrowded and colorful pockets of cove:

If you’re feeling ambitious you can do the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, which is 6km of beautiful beaches. I just did a portion thereof because honestly, I got too distracted by staring into the sea and watching the dogs chase waves.

Such a gorgeous city! I’ve been spending quite a few weekends up there—and while I couldn’t live there, I’m always struck by how beautiful it is!

  3. Steph, those pictures are beautiful! I did the Bondi to Coogee walk twice when I lived in Bondi and the Eastern Beaches are so amazing.

Especially Mckenzie Bay, that one was my favourite :-)

Thanks, I kind of wish I got around to doing the whole walk. Next time!

  4. Sydney is one of my favorite cities in the world — the perfect blend of city and beach. I went for a week in spring 2009 and loved it so much, I went back to Oz for a 2-month backpacking trip a few months later!
