Best of the Blogosphere: August 2011

Posted on 25. Aug, 2011 by in Housekeeping, Links

Is it just me or is August like the longest month ever? I’ve always thought so. But it’s finally drawing to an end so it’s time for the internet roundup!

What I’ve Been Up To:

Who’s out There Now- I am! Or at least I will be soon thanks to Jeff and his dog! Jeff posted this interview with me on Career Break Secrets.

How to Live the Dream as a Twenty-Something Traveler- Katie Eigel wrote this super flattering post/interview on the neat blog 8 Women Dream.

Travel Plans- I’ve been boomeranging around all summer between Arlington, New York and Pennsylvania. Since I’m leaving for the big one (link) at the end of the month I plan to spend most of September at home with the family (minus one exciting romantic getaway to Charleston, South Carolina).

Does Home Ever Stop Being Home- Wayward Traveller- When you are constantly on the road, how do you define home? Particularly when your parents move away from where you grew up, this can be a difficult task.

40 at 40 Life Nuggets- Uncornered Market- Audrey and Dan are some of the nicest, wisest people I know, so I’m taking Dan’s life lessons to heart.

18 Lessons From 5 Years Around the World- Nomadic Matt- Likewise, if anyone is an expert on backpacking, it’s Matt. Here’s what he’s learned after a virtual lifetime on the road.

Shoe Shopping in the Grand Bazaar… Barefoot- Seattle’s Travels- Hilarious tale of why you should probably not go shopping without shoes.

7 Ways I Saved for my Australia Adventure in Only 6 Months- Pack Your Passport- Saving a lot of money in a small amount of time is hard work! Here are some more useful tips.

Photoessay: Myitkyina and the Colorful Kachin State Fair- Legal Nomads- I’m still pretty bummed I missed Myanmar on my last SE Asia trip. These pictures aren’t helping- they are so beautiful.

Exploring Japan’s Iconic Foods: Okonomiyaki- Art of Backpacking- God that stuff is good. Erin’s post made me way nostalgic for this crazy japanese spaghetti omelette thingy.

When the Honeymoon is Over- Bacon is Magic- A sober and honest post from Ayngelina about what it’s like to come home and it’s not what you wanted or expected. While this hasn’t been my experience, every traveler has their downs, and I admire her honesty.

How to Use a Squat Toilet Like a Pro- Migrationology- Headed abroad and nervous about using a squatter? Here’s a detailed and frank guide.

I love this feature! Great list.

And Legal Nomads’ posts on Myanmar have caused me to add the country back to my SE Asia itinerary. It’s such an overlooked place and looks truly beautiful.

I loved the How to Squat like a Pro find.
Also I can relate to the Bacon is Magic post. After being in South America for a year, I got a shock to the system going back home (to NZ).
