Friday Postcard: Mcleod Ganj, India

Posted on 17. Jun, 2011 by in Photos

Postcard today is from awesome reader and blogger Nicole Haber:

It’s the view from the Dalai Lama’s residence. McLeod Ganj is a Tibetan exile community in an old British hill station on the foot of the Himalayas its about a 12 hour drive from Delhi. India is notably overwhelming for travelers. Beyond stomach sickness, many travelers arrive in Delhi and bug out because of the crowds, poverty, dirt and the fact that if you’re white you can’t help but stand out. Then they come to McLeod Ganj – it is a calm oasis. You can meet here to trek deep into the mountains, or hang out and take a cooking class or teach monks English. I’ve never been to Chiang Mai, Thailand but I hear McLeod Ganj is the Chiang Mai of India. This photo was taken right before a giant storm – mini-monsoon really- broke out. Five minutes later I was squeezing past rickshaws and cows on a tiny crowded street for cover, and instant reminder that even though it was momentarily serene, I was still in India.

Great view! I think the long trek might be worth it.
