Friday Postcard: Lake Tekapo

Posted on 24. Jun, 2011 by in Photos

This week’s super gorgeous pictures come from Amanda Williams of A Dangerous Business.

People stop at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, for many reasons — the stunning alpine scenery, the milky-blue water of the lake, the brilliance of the stars here on a clear night. And, of course, the Church of the Good Shepherd. This tiny stone church, built in 1935, is possibly one of the most-photographed buildings in New Zealand. It’s situated right on the shore of Lake Tekapo on NZ’s South Island, and sees dozens — maybe even hundreds — of visitors every day. It’s not hard to see why, either.

Thanks, Alouise! The water is ridiculously blue in a lot of lakes in that area. The color has something to do with minerals that have been left behind by glaciers moving through.

I stopped in at Lake Tekapo on my way to Mt Cook. The church makes for some great photo opportunities and I particularly liked the view from inside :)

The view from inside the church is pretty breathtaking. Though, they do ask you not to photograph it anymore. I’ll admit – it’s always tough to resist!

NZ is one of the most beautiful (and diversely beautiful) countries I have ever visited. You should definitely visit!

I have beautiful photos of this area that were made in November of 2007 – this one is really a great one. I spent 32 days in NZ touring both the north and south islands. Seeing this photo makes me think I should do a painting so will drag out my albums for my photos. One never knows what will inspire a new painting. Happy Travels.

Lake Tekapo would make a gorgeous painting. And lucky you, spending a week traveling around NZ!

  5. I like it. Having seen the mountains in the background of the distant shot, I would love to see them in the close shot as well. Either way, great colors and dramatic lighting. I’m curious, was this editing in Photoshop or anything?

Thanks, Andrew. I took many more photos of Lake Tekapo, but these were 2 of my favorites.

And, other than adding a little contrast in iPhoto, these photos are not edited at all.
