Fridy Postcard: Oxford, England

Posted on 22. Oct, 2010 by in Photos

I adore literary landmarks, and Oxford is overflowing with them. The Eagle and Child is famous for being the pub where CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien (both Oxford professors) would hang out, have a drink, and compare manuscripts. Along with a couple other writers they called themselves The Inklings. Over pints at this pub two of the greatest fantasy series of all time were hashed out: The Chronicles of Narnia and of course, the Lord of the Rings. It’s now a favorite of literary tourists like me, who brush up against the walls hoping maybe a little bit of literary genius will rub off.

I’ve always wanted to go on a literary tour of England. Things like that really get me–sitting where great authors once sat, brainstorming their work. Gives me chills just thinking about it :)

I’ve done a lot of literary touring in London and the surrounding areas and I agree- being so close to the spots of brilliance is so inspiring!

I’m a big fan of Lewis and Tolkien, and I’ve heard about the Eagle and the Child, but now you’ve been there! Thanks for posting pictures.
BTW, did you hear about the new Hobbit movie moving forward?

Yeah, I can just imagine those two geniuses sharing a pint together. I did hear about The Hobbit- should be pretty good!

I studied in Oxford for a year – it’s my favorite place in the whole wide world! And yes, the Eagle and Child is a must-see. Love your blog!

Why is it that all the best writing is done in cafes? I find that walking a block to a cafe to with my laptop will inevitably inspire to be twice as productive and creative. I can definitely say being abroad amplifies that, but I have yet to try it in England.

This reminds me of the ‘Eagle’ pub in Cambridge where Crick and Watson declared their discovery fo the double helix structure of DNA!
