Friday Postcard: Split, Croatia
Posted on 17. Sep, 2010 by Steph in Photos

This enormous statue sits right outside the Roman city walls of Split. The intimidating dude is Grgur Ninski, a 10th century bishop who opposed the pope and replaced Latin services with ones in the Croatian language, making religion more accesible to the people. For reasons unknown to me, rubbing the old guy’s big toe is supposed to bring good luck, and you can see on the bottom right that it has been worn smooth and golden as a result.

I took this same pic when I was there. He reminds me of Dumbledore.

He looks to scary to be Dumbledore! Maybe Gandalf.

Wow, 10th century! Croatia was so far ahead of England in their rebellion against the Catholic church with the added bonus that their reforms weren’t the machinations of a randy king who wanted to divorce his wife! Plus, he just looks cool.

I wonder if he’d look cooler if he was randy and wanted to divorce his wife…. England definitely has the market cornered on scandal.

Ah, memories… I broke my arm there last summer, at the beginning of a 6-week backpacking trip. I will say, the doctors did a fine job of setting the bone!

It’s hard to believe that some time ago people wore such strange clothes. Probably that’s just what 500 years from now people would be telling about us.

yes, Split is a great place to start your Croatia travel and from there you are able to go to beach villas on Hvar and Brac island

If you get a chance, make sure to go to Brac! We loved it – there’s a great hostel there – it’s the only hostel in town. The Shangri La, run by Vinko and Dora!
