Puppy Love Around the World

Posted on 22. Jun, 2010 by in Photos

If you know me in real life, you probably know that I love dogs. I’ve always loved them and now that I’m headed out on the road and a puppy is something I absolutely can not have, it’s become a kind of obsession.

Luckily for me, dogs are pretty universal throughout the world. I can’t resist photographing dogs wherever I see them. Here’s a glum looking fellow near a canal in Venice, patiently waiting for his owner’s return:

Last week I put out a call on twitter and facebook asking people to send me their favorite dog picture from around the world. This was a brilliant idea- I was in dog heaven!! I ended up with photos of canines from six separate continents.

Here are the adorable and heartwarming results:

From Dave of GoBackpacking: from a campground near Maun, Botswana.  I caught the dog rubbing his back into the sand, maybe trying to itch it.

Ben from Off to Europe sent me this artistic puppy portrait from Turkey.

This one MIGHT be my favorite. Annie Betties says: This little guy was a stray on the beach of Fiji’s Mana Island who befriended us while we were backpacking there.

Another sassy stray beach dog befriended Blair and Andrea on their recent trip to Costa Rica: this stray dog came up to Blair while he was leaning against a log reading and dug a big hole, spraying sand all over Blair, and laid down.  It was pretty hilarious at the time.

A cute pup that Scott Hartbeck shot in Hvar, Croatia.

Anna spotted this flamboyant fellow at the Hamamatsu Kite Festival in Japan. The dog is decorated to look like the kites and is wearing Koinobori which are windsocks that look like carp.

Some people like Camila Navarro, are lucky enough to travel WITH their pets: We are in a waterfall in Goiás, Brasil. He didn’t like the water and in this picture he was wallowing in sand! His name is Chivito and he’s a shitzu.

The last picture is mine (obviously). We were checking our email at an internet cafe in Prague when this gentleman and his elderly owner walked in. They spoke no English and I no Czech, but puppy love is universal.

I really enjoyed assembling all these puppy pictures and I’d love to do a second round of them. If you have a cute picture of a dog you took while traveling email it to me at Steph(@)twenty-somethingtravel.com

soooo cute! i’m a dog person myself and the fact that traveling means i can’t be a dog owner is enough to make me want to “settle” down (at least a little bit) someday. i’d love to have a dog again! the fiji pooch was also my fav.

I agree, not having a dog is the biggest downside of constant travel.

The one from Fiji’s Mana Island is my favorite too, though all the dogs look adorable. Dog love is universal.

I want that fuzzy little Fiji dog! And I’m a cat person! Great idea. I take kitty photos when I travel, and they’re always so sweet wherever they may be.

I’ve got some kitty photos stored as well, maybe that should be the follow-up article?

Great shots – I’m trying to think, and I’m afraid I don’t have any photos featuring dogs! Such a great thing to encounter on your travels though – dogs are something that remind you of the familiarity of home.

Dogs are everywhere, perhaps not as many as men in numbers, but they sure don’t lose out on the number of places we will encounter them. This is a great post!

Love them all! I totally agree Steph, I keep begging my boyfriend to get a dog. He keeps responding “Don’t you want to travel?” Lucky we can meet these dogs all over the world!

I love this post!!! I am crazy obsessed with dogs…especially mine. She makes travel difficult–I always have to board her or find someone who can take care of her–but she’s so worth it. Love these pics!

I had a really hard time when I was in both Rhodes and Istanbul because there were so many homeless dogs everywhere. Cats, too. Apparently that’s just how it is over there and people get used to it, but it nearly made me cry every time I saw one.

Yeah the homeless dogs and cats make me so sad sometimes. It’s great though that you are able to keep a dog and travel!

I must say I’ve had a few thoughts on dogs when travelling too. I grew up with a dog and and totally getting one again if I ever settle. I got a nice dog picture I’ll send you now :-)

PUPPIES! I love dogs. They’re very photogenic. I like the idea of taking pictures of dogs in foreign countries in such a way that it’s obvious where they are. There could be a whole coffee table book done that way.
