Guest Posting for Twenty-Something Travel

Posted on 06. May, 2010 by in Housekeeping

Thank you to everyone who voted in last week’s poll! It is so important to me to have input from you guys, it makes me feel like I’m not just writing into a dark void.

All I Want To Do Is Explore

What I learned was that you really like having guest posts on this blog, as long as they are interesting and relevant.  It was unanimously agreed that I should feature guest posts- with a close split between those who wanted to see a new post every week and those who wanted one ever other week or so.

As a result, I’ve decided to continue running guest posts on Thursdays. Maybe not every Thursday, if something else awesome comes along that I want to talk about, I will do that instead.  Or maybe I’ll post two things. Thursdays will also be the days I run housekeeping posts like this one. But, as long as I keep getting quality, relevant contributions from other writers, I am thrilled to share them with the community.

Now is the part where I get bossy:

I get a lot of guest post requests, which is awesome and makes me so happy. However, to keep me sane and to keep things orderly, I just want to lay down a few guidelines to make everything go smoothly.

If you would like to submit a guest post:

  • Be Specific- When you email me please have a relevant topic in mind. Don’t just tell me you’d like to write “something.” I’m much more likely to be interested if you have a relevant topic already fleshed out. The more information you can give me, the better
  • Be Relevant- Here are the kind of stories I’m looking for:
  • - A travel experience you’ve had or a lesson learned (E.g.: Time to Go? or My Summer of Yes)
  • – Some awesome, original advice (E.g.: Natural Remedies for the Weary Traveler or How to Drink the Australian Way)
  • - Location based posts are okay, as long as they are unique- please no “10 things to do in New York” etc. I’d much rather have something a little more offbeat and personal (E.g.: Monkeying Around in Udaipur or A New Zealand Bucket List for Twenty-Somethings)
  • You don’t have to be a twenty-something to guest post, but your post should be relevant to travel for young adults.

    • Be Human- Wanting to promote your blog is fine, but if I get the feeling you are a marketer or a company, I’m going to refer you to my advertising page.
    • In that vein, please show me some samples of your work. You don’t have to be Bill Bryson but there is a certain standard of writing I’d like to keep up here. Please include a link to your blog, or somewhere else you have posted. If you are totally new at this, I may ask you to send me the written piece before I make a decision.

    • Photo Posts- I also run a postcards from around the world series on Fridays, so if you have one or two great photos from somewhere interesting, that’s an easier, far less competitive way to get featured.
    • Please Be Patient- I can only run 3-5 guest posts per month, which means I may have to ask you to hold off for a few weeks or even a few months! It also means I simply don’t have room for everyone. It’s not personal, I swear.

I hope that doesn’t sound too bossy, but considering the volume of emails I get; I think it’s probably for the best to be upfront.

Good plan you got going here. And you’re definitely not being too bossy. This is your site, and you have every right to run it how you want. All your requests are perfectly reasonable. Looking forward to reading more, and maybe guest posting sometime? I’d like to write “something.” ;-)

Hi Steph. I left a message, or should I say a pretty long brief description re our travels in Africa – sorry, may have left it in the wrong spot! But thought you may be interested – it is long, but it is also exciting, and you wanted detail – this ain’t you normal run of the mill “over lander “stuff, it;s the real African deal! love your site. Sue

Steph! I never said thank you for letting my guest post some photographs last December. I’ve been fairly immersed in coding my own site recently, but that’s no excuse! どうもありがとうございました。 Thank you very much :-]
