Friday Postcard: Washington DC

The Library of Congress is one of those buildings that I used to pass by all the time when I worked on Capitol Hill, but never bothered to poke my head inside. I was really missing out because I recently discovered that the Great Hall in the Jefferson Building is one of DC’s treasures. It features artwork from nearly 50 great American painters and sculptors and pays tribute to great authors and philosophers throughout time.

    I thought it was interesting how after the Capitol was burned down in 1812, the first set of books that the new Library held were bought from Jefferson’s own library. He needed more money to build his university. They agreed and paid him the sum, however, they did not like how his vast collection contained books in several languages and all kinds of subjects (i.e. cooking, art, etc). Jefferson explained that the members of Congress should have access to any kind of subject available. This is how the Library of Congress began its vast collection, which today comprises the largest and most diverse in the world, I think…
