Second Chances: Where Would you Like to Revisit?

Posted on 18. May, 2010 by in Inspiration

Some places you leave knowing you’ll never return (at least voluntarily). Other places just keep calling you back again and again.

There seem to be two major schools of thought vis-à-vis revisiting places you’ve been before. They are:

  • The “Life’s too Short” People- There are so many interesting things in the world to see that you can’t possibly get around to them all. There’s no point dwelling on ground you’ve already covered when you could be exploring brave new worlds.
  • TheQuality over Quantity” People- Why mess with what you already know you enjoy? Sure it’s good to branch out a little, but if Spain is what you love, stick to Spain.

Prague in the Fall

I, of course, am conflicted.  I’ve been visiting London over and over for years now and I can’t seem to get enough of it. Seeing Big Ben and the gherkin is like visiting old friends and yet I still feel different and learn something new every single time I walk along the Thames. I adore that city and will never, ever pass up an opportunity to visit.

On the other hand, outside of England there aren’t very many places I’ve been more than once. At this point in my life I’m far more focused on seeing new parts of the world than returning to the ones I already know.

Zagreb Opera House

Still, in the back of my head, there is a list of places I need to get back to. These places are all very different, and my reasons for needing a second encounter vary. Among them:

  • The place I didn’t give enough time: Zagreb

That one hurried evening in Croatia’s beautiful capital before I rushed to catch a bus left me intrigued and wholly unsatisfied.

  • The place I may have misjudged: Prague

The rainy November weather and bickering travel companions may have clouded my judgment on this city that everyone but me seems to love.

  • The place where I felt a connection: Rome

If London is my favorite European city, Rome is a close second. Even though it was late December, my time in Rome felt like constant sunshine. I’d love to go back and soak up some more.

Other places I’d add to the list: Amsterdam (never did see the red light district- that’s a story for another time), Puerto Rico, and Edinburgh. I’m sure that as I continue to travel this list will only grow, until one day I get around to making a second round.

The Roman Forum

What places would you most like to revisit?

( Post your answers in the comments and I’ll make a post of the best ones next week.)

Bali, first time travelling and it was my first stop outside of Australia, I didn’t leave Kuta and I despised the place for so many reasons. I know there is so much more beyond Kuta and I’m disappointed I missed it so I will head back. Still even the thought of passing through Kuta makes me feel dirty, I really hate the place that much.

I think nearly everywhere I’ve visited I want to go back too. Unless I live there or spend a lot of time somewhere I always leave feeling like I saw it all but did I really experience it? did I get to the heart of it!? The countries high on my list to revisit are Albania, Croatia and Greece and Slovenia. I regret not seeing more in Paris but I think for me Paris is one of those cities that if I’m close by I’ll always think may as well take a side trip to Paris! Also Naples, revisit Pompeii, got wizzed around so fast it’s all a blur!

i would love to go back to thailand. even though i had the best time partying on the beaches of ko tao, ko phi phi and ko phangan, i never really ventured beyond the main strip.

i would love to go back and eat more papaya salad in local eateries with no menues. i’d like to walk into the forests faraway from the guesthouses, and explore more places outside of the “farang” frequented areas.

if i had a second chance at thailand, i’d spend less time consuming buckets and more time visiting different parts of the islands by longtail boat or rented scooter.

    and even less time sleeping/recovering.

    What a great post!

The place where I haven’t spent nearly enough time: NYC. But it’s close enough to me (Boston) that I can visit easily.

The place I’d like to see under better circumstances: Capri. I loved Capri, but I didn’t get to see its best attraction, the Blue Grotto, because the waves were too choppy that weekend.

The place I’d like to see at night: Milan. I’ve sped through there a few times, but I’d really like to hit the legendary club scene.

The place I return to over and over: Las Vegas. Like anyone didn’t know that already. :-p

Great post! It got me thinking about past travel and, well, it’s really hard to pinpoint just one place. But…if I had to choose it would be Leh in northwestern India. My husband and I did a three night trek up to the peak of Stok Kangri. He made it to the summit, while I only made it to the second base camp. I had to give up due to altitude sickness.
He summited a 6,137 meter (21,035 ft) peak while I had to lay in my tent too sick to eat.

Yes, if I were to go back anywhere it would be to that peak – slowly this time, to ensure I could stand with him on that mountain.

Although I’m a bit biased since I lived there for five years, I’d definitely give Prague another go. Let me know if you’re going so that I can steer you away from those awful souvenir streets that have taken over parts of the old town.

There are so many places I’d like to revisit – our list of things to do only seems to get larger after we spend time in a place. Georgia, Tajikistan, Nepal, India, Peru and Guatemala are all places I’d like like to revisit and spend more time to learn about different regions.

I’m on both sides of the fence here. There’s so many places I want to go, yet, there’s places I’ve fallen in love with and would love to go back. In fact my upcoming trip (halfway round the world – I’m travelling to Canada the long way from Australia on a working holiday) – I’m planning to spend some time rediscovering Croatia and Bosnia, which I loved on the first visit, yet adding in some new places as well, and seeing things I missed the first time.

Over the years I’ve been to Vienna (which would be my favourite city in Europe) about 5 times, often just on the way to somewhere else, but I can always stop for a day or two and see something new, and London is somewhere that I’ll always find something to do, even if just for family and friends, and revisiting the places I loved when I lived there.

Places I really want to go back to? Croatia, Moscow, Spain, New York, Turkey… plus lots more!

For me – the key is mixing it up a bit.

India for sure. We spent 6 weeks in India at the end of our year long RTW trip. Our thoughts were that we would be professional travels and would be able to more easily adapt to the chaos that is India. While part of that was true, we were also tired and ready for some comforts of home after being on the road for so long. It’s not that I didn’t like India, it’s just that I was so tired of the annoyances that travel sometimes brings, that India was probably not the best place for me to be at that time. I know it deserves another chance, and I can’t wait to go back someday.

The first time I went to Mexico I got left behind by the group I was traveling with. That soured Mexico for me. The second time I went back motivated by the person I was going with and I LOVED it, so much it left me wanting more – now I want to go back to Mexico once a month! Ha! :-)

Another place I’ve loved but want to go back to is the England outside of London. London was great, but the countryside had SO much history and all I really did was drive through, get out and stop for food once in a while. I’d want to go back, take a loooong journey through all of the United Kingdom outside London…including stops in Ireland and Scotland of course!!

I can think of very few places that I have been that I don’t want to go back to, especially because I’m usually only in a place for a week or two at most. Every place I travel to and love – Cartagena, Buenos Aires and Mendoza, Cinque Terre, San Sebastian, etc, etc – goes on my “to return to someday” list. Unfortunately, that list is still dwarfed by the “places I haven’t been yet and want to go to” list, so for now, I’m concentrating more on seeing new places, with the occasional stop somewhere familiar.

For example, when I do return to Italy, I’ll probably schedule a few days in Cinque Terre, but then visit other cities I haven’t seen yet. And I’ll combine a few days in San Sebastian, Spain with my trip to southern France.

I would love to go back to Tibet to go further and enjoy the landscape and the company of pilgrims for a longer period of time. This year i’ll be in Shanghai for the 2nd time and i guess it’s good if you learn to see a place differently. When you visit for the 2nd time you don’t feel so much as a turist, you can enjoy the place better because you already know how to move around and don’t feel the cultural difference so much. There are a lot of places i want to go back to, but it’s not easy to decide if i’ll go somewhere new or repeat a good experience. I was once in Morocco and hated it and when i went back, a few years later, i loved it and i’m planning to retur. Among 2nd visits, being Tibet nr 1, i’d go back to Turkey, Cambodia, and Italy.

Congrats on your blog – although i don’t comment often, i read every article with great pleasure.

Stephanie – It seems that my answers are the complete opposite of yours. After living in Prague for 4 months I find that is comes close to my favorite city which also happens to be London. If you ever get around to revisiting I can provide a bit of “insight” into what I found spectacular…During my travels to Rome I feel like I lost a bit of the history amongst the crowds, tourists, and modernization of the city. On the same track I think I need to give Florence another chance too…

Montreal, I went there for spring break in the first week of March, and I want to return there, preferably in the summer, and get out of Montreal, to Quebec City and others that I haven’t done yet. It was the first solo trip outside of USA that I did and I really loved the place.

But there’s 2 other places I want to return to, and I didn’t get to see all when I went to those places the first time, partly because I was stuck in a school group. Italy and Greece. Plus it would be easier for me to navigate Italia because I learned Italiano this year in college.

I do want to touch other places though. Loves to travel.

I’m lucky enough to be married to an Irishman so I get to go back to Ireland almost every year. I’ve seen a lot of the smaller towns outside of Dublin, but I’d like to go to the north and southeastern corner. Seen Galway, Cork, and Dingle on the west and southwest. I happen to enjoy Dublin, except for the early shop closing times.

•The place I didn’t give enough time: Austria
Fresh air, the green Alps, gorgeous views. I must go back, a couple of days was never going to be enough.

•The place I may have misjudged: Mozambique
A lifted wallet, corrupt border officials and scamming money changers within two hours of entering the country left a sour taste in my mouth. Although I loved the rest of my trip, another one is on order to put those bad memories to bed.

•The place where I felt a connection: Galway

I have two kinds of places I go back to.
    1) Places where I had a bad first impression that wasn’t the city’s fault. First time in Paris, all the museums and the garbage collectors were on strike. So it was stinky and nothing to do.

    2) Places I just enjoy being.
Another vote for Croatia. I never get enough of Italy either. I also go back to Prague and Vienna regularly. Oh and NYC.

Going back to places at different times of years with different people are like going to different cities.

Sevilla, Spain. I studied abroad here and I loved it.
Granted it might not be the same going back, but there is just something about the Andalusian lifestyle. Maybe it is better to live than visit? However, I worry that if I went back it would not be the same and the romantic nature of the city would be lost. Perhaps it would be better to state that I wish to travel back in time to when I was there before and live it again, in my early 20s. As you can see, I am conflicted between the desire to revisit and the worry of (to quote Thomas Wolfe) You can’t go home again.

My mom, sis and cousin came to visit when it was cold and they were miserable and wanted to go home early. Luckily, they did some research after the fact and realized they came at a tough time weather wise and want to go back.

I know what you mean about London. I feel that way with Italy. Despite revisiting countless times, I am still not finished with the country. I would love to revisit Luxembourg. I spent just one night in Vianden, right near the German border. The lush green hills and castles atop them intrigued me, instilling that notion that I had to spend more time exploring the country. Many places in Europe I visited as a kid, from 8 to 14 years old. While I remember the experiences, I was young and now crave to return with my older eyes.

As a kid my family did a lot of domestic travel and over the last few years I’ve had a chance to revisit a lot of the places we went like Yellowstone, San Francisco and Mesa Verde. You get such a different perspective going back as a grownup.

Oh, where to start? There are very few places I wouldn’t like to revisit. The one that stands out is Jakarta.
Some places on the top of my revisit list are Japan, Rome & Florence, Paris (was there last when I was 16), and Croatia. Prague is always on there because I have loved it for 14 years, yet there are still plenty of things I haven’t done there. As others have said, I think if you go back and have a few days there, you will love it, too. Then again, everyone is different! :-)

Pretty much need to do all the cities I visited again, I wouldn’t take anything back but spent most of time visiting the inside of bars with my friend. I’m returning 4 years later with my girlfriend to experience it all again…and more!

Flying out in 6 weeks so check out my site soon…

Fes, Morocco is a choice favorite I’d like to revisit.

Before heading to this landed inhabited by Muslims, my parents and friends were telling me not to go. They said it was dangerous.

Regardless of the outcome, my girlfriend and two guy friends were determined to go; we knew it would be an experience (good or bad) either way. In fact, my girlfriend and I were prepared to wear long sleeve shirts and pants (exposing as little skin as possible), avoiding eye contact with men and only speaking when spoken to.

The trip itself was short lived , only a long weekend, but it was the best travel experience I encountered during my semester abroad in 2006. The Muslims were the most hospitable people I had encountered, the food was amazing, the culture was peaceful, La Medina was mysteriously beautiful. It was a world completely opposite from what our family and friends warned us about – it was perfect.

Although we were invited to dinner with a variety of Muslim people (even though they were in the middle of their traditional Ramadan), we declined – the one thing I regret from the trip. I’d love to return to Fes, Morocco and really dive into the culture. See where these people live and how they live and create a cultural exchange via dialogue.

Hopefully, someday, I will return. I’m still torn, too – having a list of places I’d like to go before I return to places I have been…but, it’s still on my list!

I definitely want to get back to Mali. We spent a month there and didn’t get to see it all. It was surprising how much there was to see and do. The people are friendly, the landscape is diverse and beautiful, the culture and history is amazing, the food is great, the prices are cheap, and…I could go on and on.

I definitely want to revisit San Francisco, over and over again (I’ve been there twice and always feel there isn’t enough time to do what I want to do)…and London for sure!

I’m on of those “life is too short” types. There are so many places to see, it’s hard for me to double up on a particular city.

That said, I absolutely loved Prague. 5 days wasn’t enough. I would like to go back for a longer amount of time (maybe live there for a bit?) There’s even a famous stature on the bridge…it is said that if you rub the image of the dog, you are destined to return to the city. I didn’t hesitate to rub it.

Still waiting for fate to send me back.

I’m probably more prone to head somewhere new as well, but there are definitely places that deserve a couple of thorough visits.

I would give Paris a second chance. I was sick when I visited, and I didn’t have as good of a time as I expected.

I love Amsterdam! I’ve visited it 3 times, and I loved it every time! So much art and culture.

I would revisit New York. There was so much to do, and I was only there for three days. I didn’t get to see a broadway and I didn’t get to the top of the Empire State. I would also love to see this place in the summer and fall. I went during winter and the trees on central park were bald. They were still pretty though.

I was in Spain 3 months and that was not nearly enough. I would need at least six months there to be close to satisfied. I definitely need to give Madrid a take 2. But then again it is Spain, obviously so much to see.

[...] Second Chances: Where Would You Like to Revisit? Sometimes things get in the way of our enjoying a new place. Steph at Twenty-Something Travel ponders the reasons why and the places she’d like to give another chance.
