Friday Postcard: Travnik, Bosnia

Travnik Fortress, originally uploaded by StephYo.

This is another one of the imposing fortresses built in the Balkans during the Middle Ages. Travnik was an important regional capital during the Ottoman Empire. It declined in prominence over the centuries and today it is a minor tourism center about 90 km from Sarajevo. Today it’s known for it’s beautiful man-made waterfalls; it’s delicate painted mosque and its 15th century architecture.

I’m so thankful that these beautiful buildings have escaped the toils of war, great pics.

Thanks! I think it is very fortunate that so much in the region has survived/been rebuilt.
