Our first Christmas away from home this year in Melbourne and we were invited to join a family Christmas dinner with some lovely people we met on a campsite in New Zealand. 15 for dinner, 3 POM's, 1 American. Loads of Auzzies, food and drink. Eased the pain of being away from home and my kids! You never knew who you may meet on the road!

Great post - I made it back home this Christmas although it wasn't certain...but this is good advice for next year when I may not make it back.

Cheers!

I love it when you can find your much-loved traditions in unexpected places. While on my career break travels with my boyfriend in 2007, we found ourselves celebrating Thanksgiving on a roof top apartment in the heart of Bangkok hosted by some former Peace Corps volunteers. While we Americans were outnumbered, it was still a great way to celebrate the holiday with new friends. And they even managed to find a turkey, stuffing, corn, and even pumpkin pie!

Another option is to check in with your local embassy to see what events they may have going on for expats. My partner at Briefcase to Backpack, Sherry Ott, did just that and was able to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving Down Under!

I've never spent a holiday away from home, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. But I LOVE the advice, especially "observing other traditions." So true.

I really do think that spending important days away from home is an oppurtunity to really make the most of wherever you are.

Nice post, I totally agree. Having a group of friends in a similar situation to you makes the experience much, much easier.

I spent Christmas 2007 in Galway. After a beautiful Christmas dinner (and heaps of Guinness) with some Irish, American, and Australian travelers, we made our way to a swimming platform and jumped in freezing Galway bay. Nevermind the cold and snow, it was an unforgettable experience. A Christmas to remember.

Our Christmas tree? A decorated, orange street cone.

Last year I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's AND my birthday away from home and enjoyed it by being around people and getting into the culture of the location. For instance, I spent Christmas in an Ethiopian church. Wonderful!
