iTunes University: Learn as you Go
Posted on 25. Aug, 2009 by Steph in Resources
I think that most people who love to travel are life-long learners. Travel offers so many great oppurtunities to educate yourself: before, during and after a trip.
If you use iTunes than you already have access to iTunes University (http://www.apple.com/education/mobile-learning/) a free educational program provided by Apple and major universities and centers of learning across the world. Going through the Itunes store, you can download video and audio lectures on just about every subject imaginable. These can go directly onto your iPod or iPhone; you can take these lessons with you all over the world.
A few possible applications (iTunes won’t let me link to these programs but a search on iTunes should turn them up easily):
- -Learn another language- click on the language subheading for classes in beginner’s German, French, Russian, even Ancient Greek
- -Discover a country- Mhz has an ongoing program entitled “3 countries you ought to know about” which showcases diverse and less discussed locations. Other programs such as the Travel Study Program at Stanford are also location specific.
- -Explore a museum- Even across the world you can browse the Smithsonian Folk Life Festical or learn the secrets of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Quite a few museums have pages with lectures and virtual tours.
This doesn’t even touch on the lectures in art history, archaeology, anthropology and a vast amount of disciplines from which you can mine information. I did mention this is all free right? Simply click and download the programs you want.
Has anyone found any other cool programs on iTunesU?

Wow, somehow I totally missed the boat on that one! I’m an avid Apple user but somehow never noticed iTunes U. Just checked it out and it looks like it has tons of things perfect for long train/plane rides! Glad you wrote about it

You can link to apple podcasts and apps by right-clicking their album art pictures. You get a funny URL (like http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=280043653 for Indie Travel Podcast) which directs browsers to open the right page in iTunes.
